Periodontics and Gum Disease
Periodontal disease, also known as "gum disease," is a chronic bacterial infection that deteriorates the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Although this problem generally is painless, it is a real disease that can result in tooth loss! You might not even know you have it.
Normally, your bone and gum tissue should fit tightly around your teeth. When periodontal disease exists, this supporting tissue and bone decays, forming "pockets" around the teeth. Eventually, these pockets become deeper, providing a larger space for the bacteria to live. Ultimately, too much bone is lost and the teeth need to be pulled.
Additionally, health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and low-birth-weight babies have been related to periodontal disease. Just another pertinent reason to maintain good oral hygiene.
